SHODH YATRA

44th SHODH YATRA Organized Jointly by SRISHTI and NIRMAN SEARCH (Shodhgram) to Mendha Lekha, Gadchiroli, 12-18th June 2019

Shodh Yatra, an initiative by Padma Shri Prof Anil Gupta (Professor, IIM Ahmedabad) aims to undertake a journey for the search of knowledge, creativity and innovations at the grassroots. Shodh Yatra is an attempt to reach out to the most remote parts of the country with a firm belief that the hardship and challenges of natural surroundings are prime motivators of creativity and innovations. Shodh Yatra aims at unearthing such traditional knowledge and grassroots innovations. It’s also a journey of mutual exchange and sharing of knowledge that has been accumulated over the years.

  • To learn about the experiences of the farmers engaged in organic farming and inform other farmers about the same.
  • To encourage the curiosity of the children and to discover the knowledge of bio and crop diversity among rural people.
  • To meet the people who solve their problems through their presence of mind and inborn ability, store their knowledge and felicitate them.
  • To compile and disseminate the knowledge, which is fast disappearing and establish a dialogue between the old generation and future generation

The 44th Shodh Yatra was organized in the tribal villages of Dhanora Tehsil of Gadchiroli District with collaborative efforts with NIRMAN. It started from SEARCH, Shodhgram and traveled through 18 villages covering a distance of around 80 km from 13th to 18th June, 2019, and ended at Mendha Lekha, the village famous for its fight for the community forest rights. Along with Prof. Anil Gupta and the SRISHTI team, 30 participants from all over India and 10 NIRMANees participated in this Shodh Yatra. Various innovators in arts, health, education, biodiversity, farming, and food were felicitated during the process. It was an intense learning opportunity for the participants to understand the lives and realities of tribal people.

NIRMAN – IITB

IIT Bombay is the most prestigious technical institute in India, famous for its contributions in the fields of technology, engineering and research. In 2014, IITB approached NIRMAN to conduct focused training workshops for its students to expose them to social challenges, understand and inspire them to solve social problems and nurture their social consciousness.

NIRMAN developed a specific training program for this and the first workshop with 30 participants from IIT Bombay took place in Gadchiroli in December 2014. Since then, the association has become stronger and multi-pronged. The students have started coming to Gadchiroli and in SEARCH for their internships. The second training workshop with the next cohort took place in December 2015. And now, opportunities for further collaboration with IITB students and faculty for training and research work in Gadchiroli are being explored.
